Gary has been a teacher, coach and counselor for over thirty-five years, most recently completing twenty-three years at Bend High School as a counselor. He specializes in advising students through the college admission process, and since 2010, has supported students pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

In 2009, Gary participated in IB training at the Atlanta International School in Atlanta, Georgia. Gary is known for his limitless energy on behalf of students who come under his guidance.

Gary received his B.A. in Education from Pacific Lutheran University, his M.S. in Counseling from Oregon State University, and his IAL (Initial Administrative License) from the University of Oregon. Gary is an expert in many areas of college admissions, with special expertise in curriculum and class scheduling, IB/AB testing, working with homeschool students, supporting students with learning disabilities and general test planning. He is an active attendee at regional NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) conferences and makes a special effort to tour colleges – including recent visits to Harvey Mudd College, Barnard College, Columbia University, Whittier College, Cal Tech, the Claremont Colleges, the University of Redlands, Washington State University, Whitman College and the University of Idaho, among others. Gary and his wife have two grown children.In April 2015, Gary received the top Sage Award as Bend “Citizen of the Year” from the Bend Chamber of Commerce. Gary is also the recipient of the Oregon Counseling Association’s “Promising and Innovative Practices” Award.
